Several days pass and I go to the woods each night in hopes that Gabriel will come to meet me. But he doesn’t show, and after a fortnight passes, I begin to worry.

“What’s wrong with ye, Tavie? Da will have yer hide fer sure if ye don’t hurry up and get down to the keep,” I yell as I burst through her bedroom door in a rush.

“Hold yer tongue, Sulwen.” She rises from the chest next to her bed with cloths in hand. “It’s my woman’s time, and I have to change beforehand, ye ken?” She grumbles something else as she goes about making herself ready, and it suddenly occurs to me that I can’t remember the last time I had my own flux.

My hands fly to my mouth as I gasp in shocked recognition.

“What is it? Ye look as if ye seen a spirit.”

I grasp the bedpost to steady myself. “I think I’m with child.” I look down at my still flat stomach and with a shaking hand lightly begin to stroke it through the layers of my dress.

Tavie rushes over and shoves my hand away, giving me a stern look. “Are ye daft? What if Mother happened by and seen ye in here stroke’n yer belly like such? Ye’d be set aside, that’s what. Ye have to keep yer wits about ye, Sulwen. This cannae get out amongst the clan. Da will raise war upon the Enkelit himself for sullying his daughter’s good name.” She steps away and begins to pace with heavy steps that echo throughout the large room.

A bairn … I can’t wait to tell Gabriel. He’ll be so excited. Da will have to let us wed. It’s the only choice now. Elation floods my senses as the answer to my prayers finally comes to fruition. “We’ll be married. Don’t ye see, Tavie? Da will’na turn him aside in favor of Leathan so long as I’m with child.” An excited giggle escapes me.

I throw my arms wide and scoop her into my embrace and spin us both around and around until we collapse on the bed. Me in a fit of joyful giggles and her grumbling for me to let her go. “Sulwen Macgregor, have ye lost yer wits? Da will have his head for this. He’ll not let ye marry the likes of an Enmortal. He’d sooner die than have ye wed to one of them. Tis forbidden by the Jumalat and ye well know it.” She rambles on and on … her sensible declaration falling on deaf ears.

I spring from the bed, in a hurry to have this day over with so I can rush to our meeting place and tell Gabriel my news. A baby … a wee bairn for us to love. We’ll be a family … my family.

“Sulwen!” Tavie yells as I breeze past her and out the door.

“I’ll not have ye ruin this fer me, Tavie. Not this,” I call out over my shoulder to her.
